Blink - The Power of Thinking Without Thinking

3 stars (Blinking) - Ok but not great...seem to wonder off in too many different directions at times. 5 stars (Really Interesting and an Easy Read) - Blink is a look at all the various things scientists have discovered about how we think without knowing we're thinking. It particularly takes a long, hard look at why it is that people's first impressions so often conflict with either what careful analysis says or what people think they believe. Gladwell looks at a broad range of applications of these ideas. He looks at why, even though Pepsi wins the blind "Pepsi Challenge," Coke continues to be the market leader. He investigates the psychology and split-second thinking that caused the death of an unarmed, fleeing immigrant from over 40 gunshots fired by NYPD officers. He looks at various factors that affect everything from standardized test scores to electing a President. Some have suggested that all Gladwell really tells us is that our first impressions are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. If after reading this book that's all you come away with, you have completely missed the point. The point is that whether those impressions are right or wrong is governed by a complex set of physiologic and experiential rules, and that we can do something about them. Cops can do things to make sure those first impressions don't result in an innocent death. And yes, you can learn to tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi when you drink a whole can, not just a sip. Gladwell is a writer for the New Yorker, and his writing style is very much like a bunch of magazine articles. But they are very GOOD magazine articles, and you want to read them all. 4 stars (Informative) - This book was very interesting to me, though I will admit it got boring at parts. Some sections were just very repetitive and seemed to be overkill, but the overall message the book sent was intriguing. It helped me understand the way the mind works and how people use this knowledge of their mind...

The Tipping Point- How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference

1 stars (Please - Stop Him Before He Writes Another Book!) - This is the second Gladwell book I've read, and unfortunately its as bad as the first (Blink!). His basic point is that little things can make a big difference. Gladwell's problem, however, is that he doesn't know what he's writing about, and it's a fatal flaw. For example, early in this book he relates how a "small change" in Brooklyn policing strategies turned into a "large drop" in crime. In reality, "broken windows," accompanied by much more data-driven and administrative follow-up policing referred to by Gladwell was a large (not small change). The reality is that "broken windows" policing ended up going far beyond simply pursuing those with minor violations (eg. fare-beating) to include studying crime patterns (location, timing, etc.), setting improvement goals, and regular high-level follow-up. Secondly, "Freakonomics" research concluded that the crime-rate decline began BEFORE the change in policing, and that much of the decline was due to increased staffing. Gladwell also attributed the decline to improved economic conditions - however, no such decline accompanied prior economic good times. Finally, Gladwell offered no explanation of why similar steep declines in crime occurred across the U.S. at the same time - without regard to any change in policing! Another of Gladwell's problems is that he doesn't seem to understand anything about statistics. The fact that a change in policing suposedly occurred at the same time as a decline in crime rates seems to be "proof" of causation for Gladwell. One of the first lessons in statistics, however, is that "correlation does not imply causation." Summarizing, the book starts out poorly, and goes downhill from there - increasingly boring, confusing, and totally lacking in credibility. Don't confuse, aggravate, misinform yourself with this book 5 stars (This Little Book will Make a Big Difference) - This fascinating book is an investigation into ...

Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association- Fifth Edition

4 stars (Important but not compelling) - I understand that the rigors of academia require exhaustive research and documentation, however, that is no excuse for writing which is too dense, difficult to read, or not engaging to the reader. If more "academics" would learn how to write like real people instead of researchers, perhaps their messages would be communicated more effectively... and maybe people would LEARN more. Isn't that the point? There is no excuse for bad writing -- even if you are a genius! 3 stars (It's really tough but you will need it!) - I tried for a long time to deny using this book, even though I bought it off a course list and had it on my shelf. After being told several times by professors that my documents needed to be in APA style, with no quick description offered, I have been forced to go in and learn the format. It's a bit like learning a foreign language but since I've learned to use it, it's come up again, and again, and again, so I'm glad I finally did it. Check out "The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book" as well. It's a fun read, based on sound research, that let me test my EQ online. Boy, did I need my EQ skills while learning APA style! 4 stars (More User-Friendly Than Widely Acknowledged) - It's difficult to understand why so many reviewers find the APA style so difficult. Perhaps this is due to having weaned my teeth on APA during my Ph.D. Rather than finding the style convoluted, confusing, or inconsistent, I find it as clear as the equally valuable "Chicago Manual of Style." In particular, the APA's method of in-text notes makes it easy for the writer and reader to document and locate source materials. Once you grasp the basic premise of footnoting and endnoting, the overall style is coherent. Besides, if you are going to write in the social science field, like it or not, APA style is here to stay--so you may as well learn it and use it. Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends...

Tickle His Pickle- Your Hands-On Guide to Penis Pleasing

5 stars (I learned to tickle his pickle!) - This book is so wonderful. I was challenged before, and now I tickle like a pro. 3 stars (Good read, but probably basic) - I bought this book in hopes I would get some simple, straightforward advice about how to perform oral sex and touch my boyfriend in pleasing ways. I don't have a whole lot of experience in these areas, and when in doubt, I read. This book certainly gave me the information that I wanted. The instructions were well illustrated, simple to follow, and haven't failed me yet. It's also short and easy to read. At the same time, I give the book 3 stars because, like some of Sadie Allison's other books, the techniques covered in the book are a bit simplistic. If I'd really sat down and thought about it or simply practiced, I probably could have come up with most of the things in this book on my own. If you have a lot of experience, this book probably won't give you much useful information. 3 stars (Nothing new really) - I am a professional educationalist without time to pick up babes. Unfortunately, that means I have had to resort to onaismistic urges. I bought this book to help pleasure myself, but frankly it is written for women, or at least for someone who doesn't know their way around penile equipment. For them it is good, but were you to be a male interested in new mehtods, then this one probably wont due. ...

You Can Heal Your Life

5 stars ( You Can Heal Your Life ) - This book is a book of positive thought and loving tools. I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the negativity, pessimism and other things happening that have brought you down. I changed my life and I have this book to be thankful for as a guide to a better me Love you all G 1 stars (unhappy with the condition of the book!) - I wish it was disclosed that the pages of this book I purchased had earmarks and some pages were also waterlogged. I wouldn't have bought it. I could have just spent a couple of more dollars and bought the book new. 5 stars (Wonderful book! It saved my life!) - This book changed my life! There are no words for how much I love this book and how it changed my life and healed me. I learned so much and still apply what i've learned from this book since I read it ten years ago. Physiology of Behavior- with Neuroscience Animations and Student Study Guide CD-ROM- Eighth Edition

3 stars (ok) - the book came in a reasonable amount of time but was not the same quality as was initially stated. It said the book was brand new but it had bent corners. 3 stars (Book NOT in Good condition.) - Company was prompt and service was great. However, the book was listed in 'good' condition and it is not. I can ignore the writing and hilighting but it had a defect in which it was missing about 50 of it's pages. To me missing pages does not qualify as 'good' condition. These people obviously do not check the quality of thier books. 5 stars (Best Textbook I've Ever Read) - I would like to find Neil Carlson and shake his hand. This is is without a doubt one of the best textbooks I've had the pleasure of using. I'm in my senior year of studying cognitive sciences and so far I've had two courses that used this book. When studying for exams in those course I simply read the relevant chapters. The material is concise, well-organized, summarized just when you need it to be summarized, pockmarked with occasional interesting tidbits and stories, just to keep you interested. Every once in a while there's a small terminology box to refresh your memory on the terms you've just encountered. Simply put, it's a book that makes studying the (rather complex, actually) subject of physiology of behaviour easy. If you need this book for a course, I heartily recommend you buy it instead of just borrowing from friends. I'm not sure why you would want to buy such a book for non-academic purposes and just to read it for the hell of it - but if you do - it's a book that supplies a lot of information in a very easy to digest manner. Two thumbs up. Good job Dr/Prof/Mr/Whatever Carlson... ...

Psychological Testing - Principles- Applications- and Issues

5 stars (Psychological testing, principles, applications and issues) - I have read many books in the psychology field, and I thought this book did an excellent job of presenting clear and concise information on psychological testing. The book focused on the various testing techniques that are used in the psychology field. It raised important issues around how to appropriately apply testing and why we use them. i recommend this book to professionals in the field or to anyine who may have a curiosity about psychological testing in general. Infants- Children- and Adolescents 5th Edition

3 stars (Review for Infants, Children, & Adolescents) - Good seller, quick delivery, could have put a better description about book on Web 4 stars (Book that tells a story) - I loved the way the author brought in stories of various children. I felt like I got to know the children throughout their stages of development. A great textbook! 5 stars (This text is useful for single-parents rearing children.) - As a Forensic Psychologist I use this text and recommend it to clients to better understand and appreciate the psycho-developmental needs of their children. Of particular interest to most of those parents are the diverse tables which clarify the expected and unique behaviors of children by age group. This provides those parents with a guide book to assist them in child rearing through age 18. That reference material not only facilitates the parent's understanding of the needs of the child, but also better prepares more effective parenting skills and preparation for developmental issues which are significant in custody and visitation (or access) legal questions. Parents have reported developing a feeling of confidence since they are using scientific data in making parenting decisiions. Legal authorities -- judges and attorneys -- have felt more confident in their recommendations, opinions, and decisions which are based upon evidence. -- Swen Helge, Ph.D. ...

The Gift of Fear

5 stars (Routinely Recomend) - I have recommended this book many times. Knowledge is power and comfort. There is no hysteria created by reading this book as some reviewer who have not even read the book purport. Of course I already "knew" about many of Mr. De Becker's principles, as we all should. Its just important to be reminded or should I say "hit up side the head" with them. His examples do just that. I read the book 2 years ago when my husband hired Mr. De Becker's firm to work on a safe room for a client and YES... I have retained all the information. Imagine that. I just recommended the book to my son's girlfriend who is off to college and will keep recommending it. 4 stars (Part of the Story, But With Some Flaws) - This book does a very good job of helping people recognize behaviors and actions that may lead to trouble. Unfortunately, this book has some flaws and certainly could have been better. Mr. De Becker is clearly an expert at teaching about manipulation, grooming, and other patterns of behavior that often precede violence. He does a great service in explaining techniques used by antisocials and ways to counteract them by following our instincts. On the down side, the book contains a lot of anti-gun propaganda. The author tends to make unsubstantiated claims about how having a gun makes one less safe. He uses a couple of examples while ignoring the hundreds of cases annually where individuals with weapons have saved their own lives or those of others. Additionally, he tends to do a lot of self promotion for his company and name dropping of the ultra leftist elites of Hollywood. Although it may impress some readers that he has connections with Rosie O'Donnell and Barbara Streisand, it certainly does nothing to enhance his credibility. On the contrary, it makes him appear to be a liberal with an agenda. In this case, that is making people less self reliant for their own protection while promoting his company. That is unfortunate as it takes...

Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy with Web Site- Chapter Quiz Booklet- and InfoTr

3 stars (Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy) - The book was received in a timely basis. The book was in adequate shape. However almost every word in the book was underlined with several different colors of markers. I have never received a book with so much marker wear. I would not have purchased it if I had known how used it was. I do not remember what the condition was listed as being for this book. Therefore I cannot blame my purchase on the seller. 1 stars (Disappointed) - In ordering the PACKAGE for Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy by Gerald Corey, I entered the ISBN # for the PACKAGE. I had declined several options for the HARDCOVER ONLY because I wanted the PACKAGE including the Student Manual. I received the shipment in a fairly timely manner. HOWEVER, I was only sent the HARDCOVER! I paid $10 more than I could have gotten that single book for locally right across the street from my college! I ended up having to order the manual separately from another seller. I was unable to contact seller because name given did not match what was on the shipment. My serenity is worth more than a $10 fight! I would not use this seller again. 5 stars (Excellent source for the discovery of underlying issues in life) - If anyone thinks that this book concern only to students in the counseling field i shall tell: you are mistakenly wrong. This book really helps bringing out hidden realities of our lives that we do not get used to accept. In my own particular case it made me faced some realities that had deep roots years back, to say my childhood. This is worth the hundred dollars. Do not hesitate buying it. If you do not like any of the philosophical points of any given theory you will probably like the other one of the next chapter and so on......The chapter describing the life cycle is extra excellent...well the hell incredible.....the best you know which cycle you are in the better prepared for future stages in life the bett...

Co-Active Coaching - New Skills for Coaching People Toward Success in Work and Life

4 stars (Great Strategies) - Mentoring is so important in the world today. Having a mentor, as this book details, helps people reach the next level in their careers. Mentoring is truly invaluable. A tough thing though is finding a mentor. Where does one look? Well now there is a place to both find a mentor and also be a mentor to share your knowledge. The site is Advance Mentoring, www.Advancementoring.com You can search to find a mentor in any industry, or to be a mentor, or even both. Now the job of finding a mentor has gotten much easier. The site offers over a tremendous number of members from over 40 countries, so you are sure to find a mentor or a mentee. Good luck. http://www.advancementoring.com Noah Cirincione, CEO Advance Mentoring http://www.advancementoring.com 5 stars (A supplement, not a substitute for live coaching training.) - This book is a good summary of the "Co-Active Coaching Training" program conducted by the Coaching Training Institute. Unfortunately, it doesn't (or can't possibly) act as a substitute for the program. The training itself is based heavily on experiential learning that can't be delivered in a book. The book is useful as a reference, especially for those fortunate enough to have gone through the CTI program, and also for those thinking about signing up for the program. It might be difficult to use the model or some of the tools without the patience to figure out the jargon, but none the less, there is valuable information. One example is the "powerful questions" reference section that will benefit anyone trying to coach effectively. 4 stars (Good start or refresher course) - This book is an excellently written basics course on coaching. It focus' each of us on the tasks we know are important but sometimes neglect the subtle nature of doing it effectively. For example, listening, intuition, or what level of candor is appropriate. Read it and then keep it as a refresher when ever you feel you are off your coaching ...

4 stars (Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands CD) - Very good book. It gives you a dose of reality and makes you take a look at your relationships. It helps to see the things that are taken for granted and to appreciate and understand your spouse. 5 stars (Wonderful!) - I love that Dr. Laura tell's it like it is. Every bit of her advice caused me to step back and take a look at myself and how I can better support and love my husband. 5 stars (to close to home) - Sometimes the truth hurts.
